Wildfire threatens homes outside Santa Barbara

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

Crews on Wednesday were trying to put out a rapidly growing wildfire in the foothills above Santa Barbara, Calif., while emergency officials made reverse 911 calls ordering residents to evacuate.

"It's a rural setting above Santa Barbara. You have a lot of homes that are just scattered around up there," Los Padres Forest spokesman Andrew Madsen told NBCLosAngeles.com. "We're coming at it with everything that's at our disposal."

Smoke from the fire could be seen in downtown Santa Barbara, an affluent coastal town north of Los Angeles.?

The fire began just before 8 a.m. local time, The Santa Barbara Independent reported.

By 10 a.m., the fire had grown to 50 acres and live video showed it moving uphill toward the crest of the Santa Ynez mountains.?

Weather could be a factor, with temperatures expected to be in the 90s on Wednesday and winds up to 20 mph.

One subdivision near the fire has about 100 homes, but it was not known how many were being evacuated.

In an alert, Santa Barbara County stated that "structures are threatened and power lines are down" around the fire, which broke out near Highway 154 and Painted Cave Road.

Eight air tankers were called in to help fight the blaze.

The Painted Cave area was the scene of a 1990 fire that killed one person and burned about 550 homes.
