The standard 12 hour clock is great for most of us, but the 24 hour clock (aka military time) is more common around the world. The Art of Manliness shows off the simple conversion method.
As you likely already know, military time is essentially the same as civilian time for the hours between 1 am and noon, with the exception that you add a "0" to times before 10:00 am. If you want to convert between the military and civilian, it's all about adding or subtracting 12. The Art of Manliness explains:
- For a military time that's 1300 or larger, simply subtract 1200 to get the standard time. So for example if someone says "Meet me in room 202 at 1545," you'd just subtract 1200 from 1545 to get 3:45pm. Simple right?
- If you want to convert standard time to military time, add 1200 to any time from 1:00pm to 11:00pm. So if you want to say 6:30pm in military lingo, add 1200 to 6:30 to get 1830.
Knowing how to convert between the two time systems is helpful when you're dealing with anyone overseas, or if you just want a simple way to rattle of the time without needing to add the "pm" or "am." It's common sense once you think about it, but still helpful nonetheless. Head over to the Art of Manliness for some speaking tips for military time, as well as time zone shorthand.
