In Google, quality content is King and it?s what the search engines are looking for. But it?s not a wall of words that benefits your website or your blog; it?s quality information that is providing authoritative resources for the reader. Google wants to know what type of user experience your reader is having and they monitor this by measuring time on site and how many pages the reader views per visit.
But how can a reader stay on the site if you direct them away from the blog post or article with external linking?
Google wants to know that your blog post or website is not operating in a vacuum or tunnel. They want to know that you?re not a selfish blogger, so to speak. If you only provide resources to other pages on your site and never give any external links, Google and other search engines will think that you?re not actually providing a good resource for the reader. Your site may not provide all the necessary information that the reader is looking for and by only providing them information on your site, you are limiting the amount of authoritative resources that the reader can obtain.
By linking off of your website to other valuable resources and websites you not only add value to the blog or the article but for the reader as well.
Be SURE to set all external links to open in a new window or a new tab so that the reader is not totally leaving your website but only adding to the information within a new tab or window.
External links can come from a variety of sources but it should be relevant to the content. If you?re talking about an event or an activity in your local area, you?ll want to mention the main website to buy tickets from or to learn more about that event. If you?re a mortgage broker or you?re talking about home loans, linking to a.gov or.edu site that has more information, without being in competition with your website, will add value to the blog and for your readers. I would hesitate in linking too much to Wikipedia as many real estate agents do. While any reader can find an exorbitant amount of information on Wikipedia, this is hardly from a personal perspective or opinion which is what many readers are looking for. While it?s not a bad idea to link to Wikipedia I would be hesitant on linking more than once per article.
The rule of thumb would be to link to outside sources and external links once or twice per article and at least three or four times within your site per article (given a 300 - 500 word article). You'll want to keep people on your site by giving them teaser links to other blog posts or articles or property searches within your site but also offer them external links and resources for more information. (Such as this: Did you read the InmanNext Article about 3 Ways Your Website Should Be Working for you -and probably isn't)
So, don?t be scared of external links; make sure they open in a new window or tab, are not your direct competition, and provide useful information and authoritative resources for your reader.
