There is a slow but sure shift in the automotive world as car makers attempt to provide consumers with better fuel efficiency while not compromising performance. For Ford, this has meant downsizing their engines while adding complex turbocharging systems that provide a potent one-two punch of horsepower and fuel economy.
Down in Australia, Ford?s efforts have been led by the Falcon G6, a car known and loved for its big and thirsty inline-six cylinder. But the gurus over at the aptly-named Australia?s Best Cars think that the all-new Falcon G6 EcoBoost is the best Falcon ever, naming it the best large sedan under $60,000.
With Ford?s excellent 2.0 liter EcoBoost engine replacing the tried-but-true I6 engine, Falcon purists were up in arms over what they thought was heresy. But with 240 horsepower and 260 ft-lbs of torque, the little four-banger certainly is lacking in gusto. Sure, performance is down compared to the I6 and propane-powered Falcons, but fuel economy is way up?and like it or not, that?s an important metric these days.
Ultimately, what won reviewers over was the ability to have a large, fast, and fun-to-drive car that also delivers stellar fuel economy. Sure, the Falcon was made with bigger engines in mind, but Ford is trying to show customers that they can have their cake and eat it too. With gas prices going nowhere but up, the price of performance may not have to include higher fuel costs too.
Now Ford just has to start selling the Falcon stateside?
